Edgy Outfits for the Win – GypsyWarrior is Leading the Way

Edgy outfits have a whole new meaning now.

Remember when it was edgy just to wear all black?

I do.

I remember being chastised for my edgy outfits in adolescence.

I was written up for wearing a black uniform shirt with black pants (my mom shut that down pretty quick, bless her.)

We wore ironic crosses, over the knee socks, and skater shoes to accent our school uniforms, instead of whoreish brazilian pants and g-strings riding high.

Somehow we were still the ‘problem children.’

But when given the choice between conformity and non-conformity, my friends and I went against the current as much as possible.

Granted, my taste in fashion has matured since then, and the peers who once made jokes about our edgy outfits are now hitched to our bandwagon, so to speak.

Goth has gone mainstream and I have mixed feeling about it.

On the one hand, the popularization of edgy outfits by retailers like GypsyWarrior & NastyGal (RIP) has given me more shopping options than I could ever know what to do with.

On the flip side, I’m forced to switch up my personal style a little bit to make it my own again.

What are Edgy Outfits?

Edgy is a loose term people use to describe something that is strange, explicit, and/or unexpected.

These days, for me edgy outfits are reserved for special occasions when my self-esteem is high and the occasion calls for a statement.

For others, it may be a daily practice that helps manufacture confidence or project a persona.

Wearing fishnet stockings, for example, which are oddly en vogue right now, is one way to slut up an outfit in 60 seconds.

Which is not to say only sluts wear fishnet stockings…

But I don’t think anyone has ever been described as looking ‘classy’ while wearing fishnet tights.

Still, if Kim Kardashian is doing it, the sheep tend to follow for better or worse.

Me? I prefer to stay one step ahead of the trends.

I invoke an artistic eye and my knowledge of proportions to find new and exciting outfit combinations on the regular.

Sometimes, a new trend is irresistible, and I have to try  it.

But I also know when a fashion trend is not for me, or when it’s not worth the discomfort (I’m looking at you fishnet stockings.)

In any case, it may be that as edgy outfits are more widely accepted as real fashion, women in general are enjoying more freedom of expression.

Ain’t nothing wrong with that!
