Kimonos Forever – How to Wear a Kimono Like a Boss

Kimonos: You see them front and center on all the mannequins at the mall these days.

Kimonos

This popular summer fashion trend can be worn sheer, patterned, long or short and in any color you can imagine.

With kimonos, the options are unlimited, but don’t let that overwhelm you.

But I won’t lie, there is a right way and a wrong way to wear kimonos, and we’re gonna cover that shortly.

How to Wear Kimonos Without Looking Weird

Even if your patterned kimono looks luxurious at home, it may not translate well in the outer world.

For example, an extremely oversized kimono (like the one shown above) is probably not the best to wear out to lunch.

I just so happened to have this kimono on hand:

Always loved the color and the fabric, so the photographer and I used it in our shoot.

I have other kimonos of course, but I’d like to think my kimono soul-mate is still out there, dreaming of me too.

But I digress:

For daily wear, you’ll want to stick to light fabrics and short hemlines to keep boho chic from becoming hobo chic.

See what I did there?

Anyway, moving along, it’s very important not to overthink your outfit when styling kimonos.

The fewer the layers, the better with this garment, it’s right at home at Coachella if you know what I mean.

You know what I mean.

So go on, summer’s right around the corner, wear your kimono over your bikini top and cut-off jean shorts if that’s what makes you happy.

I ain’t gonna judge you for it.

Or, alternately, you could be super basic and just wear it with a plain t-shirt and skinny jeans.

Totally your call.

In either case, kimonos wear best when they look like as though they were tossed on at random, so don’t try to match or accessorize anything.

As for shoes, your first instinct might be to reach for your heels.

I can’t say I disagree with this, especially for longer kimonos and special occasions.

But I still think the optimal shoes to wear with a kimono would be strappy gladiator sandals, hands down.

And every once in a while maybe throw a pair of Vans sneakers into the mix, see what that’s all about.

Kimonos – All in All

So if you ask me how to wear a kimono, nothing would make me happier than to tell you all about how I like to wear it and why.

But at the end of the day, it really comes down to you and how you carry yourself.

Sometimes, the outfit doesn’t work out as planned, but you can still act like it’s exactly what you were going for.

Confidence is persuasive that way, and you just might start a trend of your own.

Feeling lucky? Try one of these kimonos:

And with that, I leave you with this quote, not about kimonos, but about bath robes because it’s kind of loosely related.

“This is a bath robe. It’s the western equivalent of the Greek toga.

There’s a stain on mine.

It signifies both power and leisure.

Say that with me— power and leisure.”
